The Doctor Behind LifeJOY

Dr. Deanna McCrary earned her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, the oldest, accredited naturopathic medical school in North America.
After a 10-year career in the publishing industry which included managing the publications wing of an international human rights organization in Brussels, Belgium, she decided to revive a long-suppressed interest in medicine. In 2003 she went to massage school to “test the waters” of this new career idea. The spark ignited into a fire as her desire to learn more led her to work for the well-known preventive medicine researcher and author, Dean Ornish, MD. With Dr. Ornish and his team she worked on a study of pomegranate juice’s effectiveness in patients with ischemic coronary heart disease and another study that involved changes in gene expression in prostate cancer patients who underwent lifestyle changes such as a plant-based diet, regular exercise, daily yoga and meditation. The result of the former was published in the American Journal of Cardiology while the latter was published in The Lancet.
In addition to her medical practice, Dr. McCrary has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine. She also teaches courses in a variety of natural health topics such as whole food cooking, traditional "nature cures" (your grandparents might remember some of them!) and a 10-week “Body Positive” course which is a multi-media class and support group that helps people of all shapes and sizes create positive—not punishing—relationships with their bodies, food and exercise.
Dr. McCrary has a ready smile and brings humor, warmth and empathic listening to her practice.
